Project Name: Demolition of The Berwyn Centre

Contract Duration: 9 weeks

Completion Date: June 2013

Demolition of superstructure and floors of an early 1900’s workman’s hall consisting of a three/four storey building that has been adapted and used as a cinema/theatre and library.

With respect to Bond Demolition I would comment as follows on their performance on the above demolition scheme undertaken for the authority.

1. The political situation and how the company handled it.

The Demolition scheme was a very politically sensitive issue in the locality and several issues arose around the demolition during the contract period, which were handled very well by Bond Demolition, who were sensitive to the issues and handled discussions with the local community very well, but were also very aware of the contract requirements and completing the scheme within the timescales quoted.

2. The proximity to the main road and the school and how this was carried out.

The scheme was bounded by the main highway (A4061) through Nantymoel and Ogwr Street. The site was in close proximity to a local primary school, public house and a residential property. All parties in the locality were kept updated on the progress of the works and the contractor held daily discussions with the school staff and the owner of residential property. The boundaries of the scheme were secured with the use of heres fencing and use of the footpath and crossing point on the main highway was maintained at all times

3 The multistorey height of the building and the restricted manner in which it had to be demolished.

The contract was for demolition of a 4 story building approx. 25m in height, which had to be demolished in a restricted manner as follows :-
a) The roofing slate had to be removed under the supervision of the county ecologist
b) The height of the rear of the building had to be reduced by hand to a suitable level to allow access by machines to carry out the remaining demolition
c) Soft strip of the interior had to be undertaken prior to commencing works to the exterior

4 The attention to Health and safety

Safety was of paramount concern with the Bond’s staff and all regulation and safety checks were adhered to by the Contractor.
All works were carried out safely and to the required standards
All the information required by the CDM regulations was submitted by the contractor

5. Working to a plan of work strictly adhered to

Works to the scheme was undertaken is accordance with the Construction Phase plan submitted by the contractor

6. Repeat contracts for the Bridgend Council

Bond Demolition have undertaken previous schemes for BCBC who would have no hesitation is awarding future demolition contracts to the contractor.
